Criteria for the Evaluation of Oral Presentations

Content

  1. Accuracy and originality of facts and evidence presented (both orally and visually)
  2. Adequacy and persuasiveness of presentation relative to topics covered
  3. Use of appropriate range and quantity of sources, clear identification of sources

Reasoning

  1. Clarity and memorability of key points
  2. Connections between facts and theories, critical evaluation of evidence
  3. Separation of facts from opinions, consideration of alternative viewpoints

Organization

  1. Orderliness, clear citation of sources
  2. Purposefulness, clear identification of topics to be addressed
  3. Smoothness of flow

Style

  1. Engagement and vigor (holding audience’s attention)
  2. Facilitation of discussion (posing of questions to audience)
  3. Responsiveness to audience’s questions
  4. Spontaneity (sparing use of notes, with no reading aloud)

Mechanics

  1. Eye contact with entire audience, facial expressiveness
  2. Fluency (complete sentences, with no filled pauses (uh, like, well, okay?)
  3. Hand and arm gestures, body movement, with no fidgeting
  4. Use of visual aids (chalkboard, computer graphics, etc.)
  5. Voice control (pitch, loudness, speed, clear enunciation)

Overall Feedback

  1. Insight:  What new thing did you learn about the topic covered?
  2. Strengths:  What were the 2-3 best things about this presentation?
  3. Teamwork:  Did all team members appear to contribute to the presentation?
  4. Weaknesses:  What were the 2-3 things most in need of improvement?
