Appeals of Gen Ed Requirements

Policy decisions and questions/answers are listed in order by date of decision, with the most recent listed first.

Gen Ed Lab credit for AP science courses

Policy approved by UUCC 11/5/02 - Invalidated by Faculty Senate Decision of 1/27/04

The UUCC has decided that students who have AP credit for science courses may petition to have this AP credit count as Gen Ed "L." Students need to submit either a syllabus for the course which gives details about the lab component of their course or a letter from the instructor of the course with their petition to the UUCC.

Appeals to designate courses retroactively

Policy approved by UUCC 4/23/02

After a course has been completed, the University Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will not consider requests to designate it retroactively as meeting a General Education requirement. Requests to consider General Education designation of courses in progress will be considered until the Add Deadline. These requests must be submitted by the instructor or department and must include a description of how the course meets the Gen Ed designation requested. Students who are interested in pursuing a Gen Ed designation for a course which is not already designated should discuss their concerns with the instructor.

Appeals of transfer course equivalencies

UUCC policy clarification sent to advisors 5/22/01

Gen Ed equivalencies for transfer courses are established by the school advising offices. If students would like to have a transfer course evaluated as a possible Gen Ed course, they should speak with the transfer coordinator in their school advising office, rather than petitioning the UUCC.

However, if the school advising office denies a student's request to count the transfer course towards Gen Ed, the student does have the right to petition the UUCC. (Please note that if the advising office has already turned the student down, it is unlikely that the appeal will be successful, but the student does have that right.)

Appeals of Composition (C) requirement

UUCC policy clarification sent to advisors 5/22/01

A student's Gen Ed Composition requirement is met by the first C course he/she takes. Additional C courses are required in Harpur and SOM, but these are school requirements rather than Gen Ed requirements. Thus, although Gen Ed "owns" the C designation (i.e., only the UUCC can designate courses as Cs), only the first C course a student takes belongs to Gen Ed. If a student wants to request a waiver or appeal of this first Gen Ed C, the appeal should be directed to the UUCC. If a student wants to request a waiver or appeal of the second through fourth Cs (which are school requirements), the appeal should be handled by the school advising office.
